Generation Instructions

When generating a Go MCP server:

  1. Initialize Module: Create go.mod with proper module path
  2. Structure: Follow the template directory structure
  3. Type Safety: Use structs with JSON schema tags for all inputs/outputs
  4. Error Handling: Validate inputs, check context, wrap errors
  5. Documentation: Add clear descriptions and examples
  6. Testing: Include at least one test per tool
  7. Configuration: Use environment variables for config
  8. Logging: Use structured logging (log/slog)
  9. Graceful Shutdown: Handle signals properly
  10. Transport: Default to stdio, document alternatives

Best Practices

  • Keep tools focused and single-purpose
  • Use descriptive names for types and functions
  • Include JSON schema documentation in struct tags
  • Always respect context cancellation
  • Return descriptive errors
  • Keep main.go minimal, logic in packages
  • Write tests for tool handlers
  • Document all exported functions

Generates a complete, production-ready Go MCP server project with proper module structure, typed tool handlers, error handling, and test scaffolding using the official github.com/modelcontextprotocol/go-sdk. Targets developers building custom MCP servers in Go who need a working project template with at least 2-3 tools, configuration management, and graceful shutdown.

Generated from the current SKILL.md.

Does this skill work with the official MCP Go SDK?
Yes. The skill uses github.com/modelcontextprotocol/go-sdk and generates projects configured to work with the official SDK.
What Go version is required?
Go 1.23 or later, as specified in the generated go.mod template.
Does the generated server include example tools?
Yes. The skill generates at least 2-3 example tools with typed inputs/outputs, error handling, and test coverage to use as templates for custom tools.
Can I use transports other than stdio?
The skill defaults to stdio transport. The main.go template is designed to be minimal, so alternative transports can be plugged in by modifying the transport initialization.
Does this include resources and prompts capability?
The skill generates server setup with resources and prompts capabilities enabled in the ServerCapabilities struct, though the templates focus on tools implementation.
