Provide Meaningful Alt Text for Images

Impact: CRITICAL (WCAG 2.1 Level A - Required for non-text content)

Provide meaningful alternative text for images that conveys the purpose and content of the image to users who cannot see it.

Incorrect

<!-- ❌ Bad: Missing or poor alt text -->
<img src="hero.jpg">

<img src="logo.png" alt="logo">

<img src="team-photo.jpg" alt="image">

<img src="chart.png" alt="chart.png">

<img src="product.jpg" alt="Click here to buy now!">

<!-- Decorative image with alt text -->
<img src="decorative-border.png" alt="decorative border image">

<!-- Complex image with inadequate description -->
<img src="infographic.png" alt="infographic">

<!-- Icon with redundant alt -->
<a href="/search">
  <img src="search-icon.svg" alt="search icon">
  Search
</a>

Problems:

  • Missing alt text makes images invisible to screen reader users
  • Generic alt text ("logo", "image") provides no meaningful context
  • File names as alt text are meaningless
  • Decorative images with alt text create noise for screen readers
  • Redundant alt text on icons alongside visible text causes double announcements

Correct

<!-- ✅ Good: Meaningful, contextual alt text -->

<!-- Informative image: describe content and purpose -->
<img src="hero.jpg" alt="Team of developers collaborating around a whiteboard filled with code diagrams">

<!-- Logo: include company name -->
<img src="logo.png" alt="Acme Corporation">

<!-- Team photo: describe relevant details -->
<img src="team-photo.jpg" alt="Our 12-person development team at the 2024 company retreat in Colorado">

<!-- Chart: describe the data and insights -->
<img src="chart.png" alt="Line chart showing website traffic growth from 10,000 monthly visitors in January to 45,000 in December 2024">

<!-- Product image: describe the product -->
<img src="product.jpg" alt="Blue wireless headphones with cushioned ear cups and adjustable headband">

<!-- Decorative image: use empty alt -->
<img src="decorative-border.png" alt="" role="presentation">

<!-- Complex image: use figure and detailed description -->
<figure>
  <img src="infographic.png" alt="2024 Industry trends infographic (detailed description below)">

<!-- Icon with text: hide redundant icon -->

<!-- Functional image: describe the action -->

<!-- Image as link: describe destination -->

<!-- Background image with important content -->
<div class="hero" style="background-image: url('hero-bg.jpg');" role="img" aria-label="Aerial view of San Francisco skyline at sunset">

</div>

Benefits:

  • Screen reader users understand the purpose and content of every image
  • Images degrade gracefully when they fail to load
  • Search engines can index image content for better SEO
  • Users with cognitive disabilities gain additional context
  • Legal compliance with WCAG non-text content requirements

    The skill provides comprehensive guidelines for accessibility and web design audits. It processes user-provided code files to generate compliance reports, which introduces a minor risk of indirect prompt injection if the audited files contain malicious instructions. No evidence of data exfiltration, obfuscation, or unauthorized command execution was found.
