Diagnose Porsche Carrera 3.2 Bosch Motronic faults and interpret DME ROMs or calibration changes. Use for 1984-1989 3.2 DME systems, including swaps into earlier cars; not generic 911, CIS, or other ECU advice.

Pelican Forum Research Reference

Use this reference when the user asks for real-world 911 3.2 Motronic debugging, engine-building, or tuning context from Pelican Parts forums.

Primary Forum Targets

3.2 DME, no-start, AFM, CHT, relay, harness, idle, drivability https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/
Engine build specs, rod bolts, cams, deck height, compression, head work https://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/

Search Strategy

Use targeted web searches or Pelican's own forum pages. Good query patterns:

site:forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/ "3.2" Carrera Motronic no start DME relay
site:forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/ "3.2" "reference sensor" "DME"

site:forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/ "993SS" "Motronic" cams lobe center

If search engines block automated access, use direct forum index pages and thread lists. Pelican's pages expose thread titles, authors, replies, views, dates, and profile links without login.

Expert-Poster Signals

Weight posts by evidence and track record, not personality. Strong signals include high post count, long join history, professional shop identity, repeated technical corrections, photos/logs, and a confirmed fix.

Names that appeared in reviewed high-signal threads or forum listings include John Walker's Workshop, Henry Schmidt/Supertec, Jeff Alton/Turn3, Bill Verburg, Flat6pac/Bruce, Matt Monson, stownsen914, PeteKz, mepstein, mikedsilva, and Wayne 962/Wayne Dempsey. Do not treat this list as complete or automatically correct; use it as a bias toward closer reading.

Threads Reviewed For This Skill

Thread URL Useful takeaway
911 Carrera (1986) Won't Start https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1193179-911-carrera-1986-wont-start.html Clarify crank/no-crank; 3.2 pump does not necessarily audibly run before cranking; DME relay is an early branch, not a final diagnosis.
Hitting rev limiter after refresh https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1192933-hitting-rev-limiter-after-refresh.html Distinguish true rev limit from tach error, reference-sensor gap, fuel delivery, ignition, and chip coding; repeatability across load matters.
Crank position sensor https://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/1193176-crank-position-sensor.html Speed/reference connector order and sensor condition are common post-engine-work traps; degraded shielding/insulation is suspect.
Wire harness https://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/1193047-wire-harness.html Photograph, tag, and verify connector pins before depinning; previous repairs make existing pin order untrustworthy.
More HP from 3.2 https://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/1186399-more-hp-3-2-a.html Ask power target, budget, and use case; healthy 3.2 engines have limited cheap internal gains; rod bolts and matched build combinations matter.
3.2ss Deck Height https://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/1192052-3-2ss-deck-height.html Measure real chamber/dome/deck values; compression, squish, fuel, and piston-to-valve clearance are linked risk decisions.

How To Use Forum Advice In Answers

  • Summarize forum advice in your own words. Do not copy long posts.
  • Cite the thread title or URL when it materially supports the answer.
  • Label forum-derived material as practical field evidence, not factory specification.
  • Prefer threads with a final repair outcome. If the thread is unresolved, say so.
  • Convert anecdotes into tests: what to measure, what result means, and what branch follows.
  • When forum advice conflicts with factory data, use the forum post as a hypothesis and resolve the conflict with measurement.

High-Value Pelican-Derived Heuristics

  • On 3.2 Motronic no-starts, first clarify cranks vs no crank; owners often say no-start for both.
  • Do not condemn the fuel pump only because it is not heard with key on. Check DME relay outputs, cranking behavior, and fuel pressure.
  • After engine removal or clutch work, speed/reference sensor connector order, air gap, and damaged insulation deserve early attention.
  • A true software rev limiter is consistent. Load-sensitive breakup or tach mismatch points elsewhere.
  • Verify tach accuracy before accepting a reported low rev limit.
  • Before depinning any old harness connector, take photos, tag wires, and verify against a diagram or trusted pin map.
  • For performance 3.2 builds, define the target before parts selection. Chip/exhaust gains are limited; larger changes require a matched engine, induction, exhaust, and tuning package.
  • Do not rely on advertised compression or piston specs alone. Measure the engine parts in hand.
