The Director's Bible — Index
A complete, end-to-end knowledge base for conceiving, directing, and producing films — built to be AI-native. It covers the craft as award-winning directors practice it (story, camera, sound, editing), the honest psychology of why it works (not the pop-science version), the full professional pipeline, and how to execute every piece of it with current (mid-2026) AI image, video, and audio models. It is designed to become the brain of a Claude skill.
Audience: an advanced, AI-native maker. Every chapter teaches the why, then ends with a → AI APPLICATION bridge translating the principle into model choice + prompt syntax.
Total: ~108,000 words across 27 chapters + this index. (Chapters 20–27 are the screenwriting wing — added because the script is the story, and the story is where films are won or lost.)
How to read it
- In a hurry / making something now? Read Chapter 19 (the workflow) and follow it. It pulls from every other chapter at the right moment. Everything else is reference you consult as the workflow tells you to.
- Learning the craft? Read 01 → 13 in order (story → psychology → camera → sound → editing → pipeline).
- Want to nail the story/script (the thing that's actually been failing)? Read Chapter 27 (the gated, rung-by-rung script process) and the screenwriting wing 20 → 26. This is where most films are won or lost — before a single shot is designed.
- Just need the AI execution layer? Read 14 → 18 (image models → video models → consistency → prompting/keyframes → audio).
The single most important idea in the whole bible: films fail on decisions made too late, not on weak craft. Lock the spine in words before you generate a single pixel. That is the entire point of Chapter 19.
The chapters
Part I — Story (the foundation you keep failing at)
| # | File | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| 01 | Story Structure | 3-act, Hero's Journey, Harmon Story Circle, Save the Cat 15 beats, want vs need, the dramatic question; how to compress any of them to 15–90 s |
| 02 | Pixar's 22 Rules | All 22 rules verbatim + annotated + AI application; the Story Spine (fact-checked 10/10) |
| 03 | Character & Scene Craft | Arc, the flaw/lie, subtext, show-don't-tell, the scene as a unit of value change |
Part I-A — The Script (The Story) — the deep screenwriting wing
The highest-leverage part of the bible. These deepen Part I from "structure" into the craft of writing a genuinely good story, then operationalize it as a process. If your videos feel hollow, the fix is here, not in the camera chapters.
| # | File | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | The Screenwriting Masters | Aristotle, Egri, Field, McKee, Truby, Booker, Vogler, Snyder, Yorke, Story Grid — compared, then reconciled into one meta-framework (fact-checked 9/10) |
| 21 | Theme, Premise & Moral Argument | The controlling idea / designing principle — the real spine; theme dramatized, never stated |
| 22 | Plot Mechanics | Causality (but/therefore), setups & payoffs, Chekhov's gun, dramatic irony, reversal & recognition, the surprising-yet-inevitable turn |
| 23 | Dialogue, Subtext & Voice | Dialogue as action, the iceberg, exposition without dumping, VO/narration writing, the scroll-stopping hook line |
| 24 | Genre & the Audience Contract | What each genre promises and the obligatory scenes it must pay off; Snyder's 10 genres; expectation vs subversion (fact-checked 9/10) |
| 25 | Idea → Polished Script | Logline formula → treatment → outline → draft → the rewrite passes → table read; screenplay format + the 2-column A/V short-form template |
| 26 | The Script Doctor | The diagnostic checklist — the 12 ways a story breaks, each with symptom → root cause → fix. This is the skill's story-grilling toolkit |
Part II — Engagement & the brain
| # | File | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| 04 | Hooks, Cliffhangers & Open Loops | Cold open, curiosity gap, Zeigarnik, Netflix binge engineering, the swipe decision, the but/therefore test |

|---|---|---|
| 06 | Shots, Framing & Composition | The shot ladder ECU→EWS, rule of thirds, 180°/30° rules, lead room, aspect ratios |
| 07 | Camera Angles & Movement | The emotion of every angle and every move, and when to use each |
| 08 | Lenses, Lighting & Color | Focal length & DOF, 3-point lighting, color theory for emotion, teal-orange, color scripts, LUTs |
Part IV — Sound, editing, transitions
| # | File | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| 09 | Sound Design | Diegetic/non-diegetic, foley, score, leitmotif, silence, the trailer riser/braam kit, VO craft |

| 13 | The End-to-End Production Pipeline | Dev → pre-pro → production → post, every deliverable, mapped column-by-column to its AI-native equivalent; the animatic-first lesson |
Part VI — The AI execution layer (currency-critical, web-verified)
| # | File | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| 14 | AI Image Models 2026 | MJ / Nano Banana 2 / Flux.2 / Imagen / SD-ComfyUI — strengths + decision table (fact-checked 9/10) |
| 15 | AI Video Models 2026 | Veo 3.1 / Sora 2 / Kling 3 / Runway / Luma Ray3 / Seedance — first+last-frame support table + decision tree (fact-checked 8/10) |

| 18 | AI Audio — Voice, Music & SFX 2026 | ElevenLabs VO (cloned voice), Suno/Udio music, SFX kit, native-audio video, lip-sync; the legal cautions |
Part VII — The procedure (this is the skill)
| # | File | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| 19 | The Grilling Workflow | The master pipeline. The state machine with 4 hard gates: idea → concept → beats → shots → pixels → post. Read this first. |
| 27 | The Script-Development Workflow | The engine room of Phases 1–2: logline → controlling idea → character engine → beat outline → A/V draft → doctor pass → script lock. The rung-by-rung interrogation that builds the story before any shot. |
Relationship to the existing cinematic-ai-video skill
This bible is the deeper foundation beneath that skill, not a replacement. The cinematic-ai-video skill is the "weaponize-attention war-room" (its SWOT, arousal-arc templates, filter-bypass tables, and complete-prompt rules remain the operational front-end). This bible adds: rigorous film-school craft, honest neuroscience (it corrects several claims the creator space states as fact), the current AI-model selection layer, and the gated grilling procedure (Ch. 19). When the two overlap, the bible goes deeper or more accurate; it does not repeat the manipulation tables.
⚠️ Currency watchlist — re-verify before the skill ships or before quoting a fact
Story, camera, sound, and editing craft (Ch. 01–13) are stable for decades. The AI layer (Ch. 14–18) drifts monthly. The research surfaced 74 specific open questions; condensed:
- Model versions & names — Veo, Kling, Runway, Luma, Seedance, MiniMax, Midjourney, Nano Banana, Flux all version fast. Re-confirm the current major version before relying on a cited feature.
- Sora status — multiple sources indicate the Sora 2 / 2 Pro API is scheduled to sunset ~Sep 24 2026 (consumer app earlier). A successor is likely but unconfirmed. Do not build a Sora-dependent pipeline without re-verifying availability.
- First/last-frame & keyframe support — confirmed for Veo 3.1, Kling 3, Luma Ray3 (up to 16 keyframes), Pika Pikaframes, Seedance i2v; endpoint-dependent for Hailuo; verify on the specific host (fal/Replicate/native) before relying on last-frame.
- Midjourney character reference —
--crefis V6/Niji6 legacy; omni-reference (--oref) was V7; verify whether V8.x has backported a character-reference feature before depending on it. - Pricing — every per-second/per-image figure is order-of-magnitude; re-check live pricing pages before quoting a budget.
- AI-music legality — the Suno/Udio vs Sony case has a pivotal hearing ~July 2026; commercial-rights guidance for AI music may shift. Both vendors are reportedly building licensed-data models.
- Platform delivery specs — loudness (~-14 LUFS), file/bitrate caps, safe areas drift; confirm against each platform's creator docs at delivery time.
- Soft-science thresholds — the "3-second retention cutoffs" and "5–8 s re-hook cadence" in Ch. 04 are directional heuristics, not measured constants; A/B-test per format.
Each chapter carries its own ## Sources section with the URLs used. Seven accuracy-critical chapters passed a second adversarial fact-check pass and were patched: 02, 05, 14, 15, 16 (currency/neuroscience) and 20, 24 (screenwriting attributions — this caught a real misattribution of Truby's Godfather "designing principle," since corrected across chapters 20/21/25).
