Tactic 02: Local & Industry Citations/Directories

What It Is

Submitting your business to relevant industry directories, local business directories, and niche-specific listing sites. These are curated platforms where businesses are listed with their name, address, phone, website, and description. Unlike entity stacking (broad platform presence), this focuses specifically on directory-style citations.

Why It Works

Directories serve as independent corroborating signals for your business's existence and relevance. Google uses citation consistency as a trust signal, especially for local SEO. Many directories have high domain authority (DR 50-80+) and pass genuine link equity. More importantly, niche directories send Google strong topical relevance signals — "this business belongs in this industry."

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Identify Your Directory Categories (1 hour)

  1. General business directories: Yelp, Yellow Pages, BBB, Foursquare
  2. Industry-specific: Clutch (agencies), Capterra (SaaS), G2 (software), TripAdvisor (hospitality)
  3. Local directories: Chamber of Commerce, local business associations, city/region directories
  4. Professional associations: Industry bodies, trade groups (often require membership)

Step 2: Prepare Your Listing Information

  • Canonical business name (EXACT same as entity stacking)
  • Address (or "service area" for non-local)
  • Phone number
  • Website URL
  • Business description (2-3 versions: 50 words, 150 words, 300 words)
  • Categories/tags
  • Logo and photos

Step 3: Submit to Top-Tier Directories First (2 hours)

  • Google Business Profile (if not done in entity stacking)
  • Yelp, BBB, Yellow Pages
  • Industry-specific #1 and #2 directories

Step 4: Submit to Niche Directories (2 hours)

  • Use backlink gap data to find directories linking to competitors
  • Search: [your niche] directory or [your niche] "submit site"
  • Submit to 10-20 relevant niche directories

Step 5: Claim and Optimize Existing Listings (1 hour)

  • Many directories auto-create listings from public data
  • Search your brand name on major directories
  • Claim and complete these profiles

Hidden Tips & Tricks

  • Chamber of Commerce links are gold: Often DR 50-70, dofollow, and only cost €50-200/year membership. Most SEOs overlook these because they seem "old school." But they're editorial-quality local links that Google respects.
  • Use Ahrefs/backlink gap to find COMPETITOR directories: Don't guess which directories matter. Look at where your competitors are listed and replicate. Your competitor's backlink profile is your directory roadmap.
  • Data aggregators are force multipliers: Submit to the 4 major data aggregators (Foursquare, Data Axle, Localeze, Factual) and your listing automatically propagates to 50+ smaller directories.
  • Review sites count as directories: Submitting to review platforms (G2, TrustPilot, Capterra) gives you both a citation AND social proof. Double benefit.
  • Look for ".gov" directories: Many government business registries provide free dofollow links. Search: site:.gov "business directory" [your state/country]
  • Don't ignore paid directories IF they're legitimate: A $200/year listing on a DR 70 industry directory is far cheaper than any other DR 70 link. Only pay for well-known, editorially curated directories.
  • Time your submissions: Some directories review submissions manually. Submit during business hours (their timezone) for faster approval.

Common Mistakes

  1. Submitting to low-quality, spammy directories: If a directory accepts everyone and has no editorial standards, it's worthless or harmful
  2. Inconsistent NAP across directories: This hurts rather than helps
  3. Submitting to 500+ directories at once: This looks unnatural. 20-30 quality directories >> 500 junk ones
  4. Ignoring directory profiles after submission: Update when your info changes
  5. Using keyword-stuffed business descriptions: Keep descriptions natural and brand-focused
  6. Not choosing the right categories: Wrong categories weaken topical relevance

Real Examples & Case Studies

  • BrightLocal study (2024): Businesses with consistent citations across 40+ platforms saw 23% higher local pack rankings than those with fewer than 10 citations
  • Clutch directory (agency niche): DR 78, agencies listed on Clutch report 15-30% of their leads come from this directory. The link itself is valuable + lead generation
  • Capterra/G2: SaaS companies that complete their G2 profiles with 10+ reviews average 3.5x more referring domains than those without

Time & Cost Estimate

Aspect Estimate
Initial setup 3-5 hours (one-time)
Cost €0-200 (most free, some paid memberships)
Maintenance 30 min/quarter (update listings)

Expected Results

  • Week 1-2: 10-20 new referring domains
  • Month 1-2: Citations fully indexed, NAP signals strengthening
  • Month 3+: Local rankings improving (if applicable), trust signals supporting other link building efforts
