Run it yourself

Persistent file-based planning for multi-step AI-agent work. Keeps task_plan.md, findings.md, and progress.md on disk; lifecycle hooks inject selected project planning context. Automatic recovery reads project planning files only. Explicit session-catchup.py --metadata reads same-project local agent session records and emits aggregate counts only; --replay may emit bounded nonce-framed excerpts. Optional gated mode can request continuation only when the host supports it and never runs commands declared in Markdown. The skill has no network upload path. Use for research or work needing 5+ tool calls.

This skill implements a robust planning and memory system for AI agents using local markdown files. It includes advanced security features such as SHA-256 attestation to prevent unauthorized plan changes, session isolation to keep task contexts separate, and secure file handling to prevent symlink attacks. While the skill reads project data into the agent's context, it uses clear delimiters and extensive defensive instructions to mitigate prompt injection risks. No network activity or suspicious exfiltration patterns were detected.

README badge for othmanadi/planning-with-files/planning-with-files

Creates task_plan.md, findings.md, and progress.md files to organize complex multi-step work directly on disk. Use when breaking down research tasks, multi-phase projects, or any work requiring 5+ tool calls to avoid losing context between sessions. Supports automatic recovery after context clears.

Generated from the current SKILL.md.

Does this skill work after I use /clear?
Yes. The skill includes session-catchup.py which recovers context from the previous session by reading git diffs and existing planning files. Run the catchup script before proceeding with any new work.
Where should I create task_plan.md, findings.md, and progress.md?
Create all three files in your project root directory, not in the skill installation folder. The skill's template files are reference only; your working copies belong on disk where the task lives.
Can I run multiple planning workflows in parallel?
Yes. Use the init-session.sh script with a task name to create isolated plan directories under .planning/, then use set-active-plan.sh to switch between them. Each terminal can pin to a specific plan via the PLAN_ID environment variable.
What should I do if I hit the same error three times?
The 3-Strike Error Protocol says to escalate to the user after 3 failed attempts. Document what you tried, share the specific error, and ask for guidance rather than repeating the same failing action.
When should I write findings to a file?
Immediately after viewing images, PDFs, browser results, or any multimodal information. The 2-Action Rule says to save key findings after every 2 view/search operations to prevent visual information from being lost.
