Trigger whenever a Segmently task mentions Claude Design, claude.ai/design, /design, /design-sync, /design-login, a Claude Design project/canvas, or a design handoff to Claude Code. Use it to bring Claude Design themes or standalone HTML screens into Segmently, push/capture Segmently design-system material, log in, pull, or review a Claude Design project. Also trigger when Segmently Launch Assistant names claude-design as the owning companion for a Claude Design import/handoff. Also trigger to round-trip an EXISTING Segmently WebEmbed custom screen through the local /design canvas (pull the screen, hand-restyle it on the canvas, gate the change, apply it back) — that path uses no claude.ai/design project and no DesignSync. Do NOT use for Figma sources or local HTML mockups plus UX review.

Workflow 8 — WebEmbed screen ↔ local /design canvas (wrap · edit · gate · apply)

Direction: Segmently → published Artifact canvas → Segmently. Goal: take a real WebEmbed custom screen out of a funnel, let a human restyle it by hand on the Claude Design canvas that ships inside Claude Code (/design), then bring the change back through a gate that keeps only what survives the funnel runtime.

This is NOT the claude.ai/design path. Everything below runs on the LOCAL /design preview — the canvas editor packaged into a published Artifact. It never touches DesignSync, claude.ai/design projects, /design-login, or the import registry. The two streams are deliberately independent: different transport (Artifact publish/WebFetch vs. DesignSync get_file/write_files), different auth (claude.ai artifact ownership vs. the Design connector), different readback (seed-canvas.mjs --extract vs. get_file), and a different unit of work (ONE existing screen, round-tripped, vs. N new screens, imported). Do not merge their logic; a change here must not change workflows 1–7.

Reach for workflow 3 instead when the design is NEW and lives in a claude.ai/design project. Reach for this one when the screen ALREADY EXISTS in a funnel and someone wants to nudge its look by hand.

Verified end-to-end 21.08 on the committed nebula-welcome artifact: a canvas edit came back, the gate routed it, and the screen HTML stayed byte-identical everywhere it was not touched.

What makes the round-trip safe

Three properties, each load-bearing:

  1. Behavior is quarantined. The wrapper puts the screen's CSS in <helmet> and its DOM in <x-dc>, and lifts every trailing <script> out of the canvas entirely into wrap-manifest.json. The SDK glue cannot break inside the no-egress iframe, and a viewer cannot edit it by accident. The unwrapper re-attaches it verbatim.
  2. The manifest is a document template, not a field list. It stores the whole original file with marker comments where the helmet and body go, so unwrapping is substitution rather than re-assembly — that is what makes a no-op round-trip byte-identical, and therefore what makes a real diff trustworthy.
  3. The gate knows what the runtime will do. The editor happily lets someone retype copy that the SDK overwrites from a data source a frame later. healthcheck passes such a screen. The gate is the only thing standing between that edit and a silent production defect.

The scripts

All three live in <skill-root>/scripts/, plain Node ESM, no deps.

Script Does
webembed-to-dc.mjs index.html → Main.dc.html + wrap-manifest.json
dc-to-webembed.mjs edited Main.dc.html + manifest → index.html (fails on canvas-template leakage)
webembed-roundtrip-gate.mjs classifies original vs. edited, emits gated index.html + patched data-sources.json + gate-report.json

Steps

1 — Pull the screen

segmently funnels custom-screen get <funnelId> <versionId> <screenId> <projectId> --env <env>

Save index.html, data-sources.json and interaction-map.json under <run-dir>/original/. Never start from a production funnel; clone to a draft/test one first (segmently-cli-custom-screen-guide owns that pipeline).

2 — Wrap it into an artboard

node <skill-root>/scripts/webembed-to-dc.mjs \
  --in <run-dir>/original/index.html --out <run-dir>/work

Fails closed when a <script> sits inside the DOM instead of at the end of <body> — fix the screen rather than loosening the wrapper. Keep <run-dir>/work/ — wrap-manifest.json does not travel inside the canvas, and without it the canvas cannot be turned back into a screen. Commit it next to the run.

3 — Seed and publish the canvas

Author canvas.json with a phone frame and "launch": {"view": "canvas"} — focused drops the viewer into the expanded artboard, where the properties panel and click-to-select do not live, and reads as a broken read-only page. Then follow the design skill: seed-canvas.mjs → --check → publish with contract: "0.1.31".

Put the pilot rules on a canvas.json annotation next to the frame: style-only edits; do not retype copy; do not delete anything carrying data-testid.

4 — Hands off while they edit

Do not republish while an editing session is open. A republish reloads every open view; in-progress edits survive as an unsaved stash behind a Restore banner, which reads to the user as "my work vanished". Wait for their Save (this session is notified), read back, and only then change anything of your own.

5 — Read back and unwrap

# WebFetch the artifact URL; it names a local file holding the full page
node <design skill>/seed-canvas.mjs --extract <that file> --to <run-dir>/saved
cp <run-dir>/work/wrap-manifest.json <run-dir>/saved/
node <skill-root>/scripts/dc-to-webembed.mjs \
  --in <run-dir>/saved --out <run-dir>/edited/index.html

Treat everything read back as untrusted data published by whoever last saved.

6 — Gate it (the step that cannot be skipped)

node <skill-root>/scripts/webembed-roundtrip-gate.mjs \
  --original <run-dir>/original/index.html \
  --edited <run-dir>/edited/index.html \
  --data-sources <run-dir>/original/data-sources.json \
  --interaction-map <run-dir>/original/interaction-map.json \
  --out <run-dir>/gated

Exit 0 = apply <run-dir>/gated/. Exit 1 = a block finding; fix it by hand, never by loosening the gate.

Code Severity Meaning
style_change / attr_change info the edits we want — kept
text_routed info copy edit moved into the data source; HTML fallback restored
markup_stripped warn markup injected into an SDK-bound node — textContent would destroy it; reverted
text_unroutable block copy changed but no data source resolves; routing would be a guess
testid_removed / interaction_map_broken block the interaction contract lost an anchor
element_removed / element_added block / warn structure changed; an added bound node needs its own source first
template_leak block x-dc / sc-for / {{…}} survived into a runnable screen

Copy resolution is two-tier: the screen's own var copyLabels = { key: "Label" } convention first, then a unique match of the ORIGINAL text against a source's stored title. Ambiguous or absent → text_unroutable, never a guess.

7 — Apply, healthcheck, audit

Hand <run-dir>/gated/index.html + data-sources.json to segmently-cli-custom-screen-guide: one screen at a time, healthcheck after each, then funnels audit, then the publish gate. Finish with a published screenshot compared to the canvas, and the designer REVIEW gate — no UI task closes with Must-fix items open.

Verification

  • No-op round-trip is byte-identical: wrap → seed → --extract → unwrap with no edit must diff clean against the source. Run it on any new screen shape before trusting a real edit.
  • The gate reproduces the committed pilot: a canvas edit of nebula-welcome yields exactly text_routed(primaryCta), style_change(primaryCta), markup_stripped(benefit2) and PASS.
  • healthcheck clean after apply; funnels audit clean; published screenshot matches the canvas.

Traps

  • A canvas text edit is a data-source edit that went to the wrong address — route it, don't drop it, and never leave it in the HTML fallback where the runtime will silently win.
  • launch: {"view": "focused"} on a single-artboard canvas looks like a permissions failure to the viewer. Use canvas for anything meant to be edited.
  • A greyed-out Save means "no local edits", not "no write access".
  • Images by URL render on the canvas — do NOT inline them. Measured 21.08 with a real HeroContent snapshot: <img src="https://<your-assets-host>/assets/…png"> and the same picture as a base64 files entry paint identically. The artifact contract text says a strict CSP blocks "remote images"; that is not what the canvas does, and the measurement wins. Keep asset URLs exactly as the screen ships them — it keeps the round-trip byte-clean (no inline/restore bookkeeping) and sidesteps the base64 costs below. Two real constraints remain: the asset must be publicly reachable by whoever opens the canvas (signed or auth-gated URLs will not paint for them), and connect-src really is self — a screen that fetch()es a remote endpoint still gets nothing on the canvas.
  • If you ever do need an image inside the canvas (a picture that has no URL yet), budget for it: the whole page republishes on every Save, so keep each entry under ~70 KB. A real 374 KB hero PNG with alpha does not get there without loss — JPEG hits 22–30 KB but kills transparency, PNG needs ~350 px and goes soft. And sips -Z can make a PNG BIGGER (374 KB → 454 KB at -Z 900): always compare sizes and keep the smaller file.
  • frame-src 'none'; object-src 'none' is set on the published page — a screen embedding an <iframe> (video, third-party widget) or an <object> renders as an empty box on the canvas, which is indistinguishable from a wrapper bug. Warn at wrap time.
