Unified Kaggle skill. Use when the user explicitly mentions Kaggle, kaggle.com, a Kaggle URL, Kaggle competitions, Kaggle datasets/models/notebooks, Kaggle forums/discussions/writeups, Kaggle benchmarks, hackathons hosted on Kaggle, Kaggle badges, or Kaggle account setup. Do not use for generic ML, GPU/TPU, notebook, dataset, benchmark, or data-science tasks unless the user clearly ties them to Kaggle.

kagglehub Dataset Reference

Official source: https://github.com/Kaggle/kagglehub

Install

uv pip install kagglehub
uv pip install kagglehub[pandas-datasets]
uv pip install kagglehub[polars-datasets]
uv pip install kagglehub[hf-datasets]

Authentication

kagglehub checks these sources in order:

  1. KAGGLE_API_TOKEN
  2. ~/.kaggle/access_token
  3. Colab KAGGLE_API_TOKEN secret
  4. KAGGLE_USERNAME plus KAGGLE_KEY
  5. ~/.kaggle/kaggle.json
  6. Colab legacy username/key secrets

Inside Kaggle notebooks, authentication is automatic.

dataset_download()

kagglehub.dataset_download(
    handle: str,               # "owner/dataset" or "owner/dataset/versions/N"
    path: str | None = None, # optional file within dataset
    force_download: bool = False,
    output_dir: str | None = None,
) -> str

dataset_upload()

kagglehub.dataset_upload(
    handle: str,                  # "owner/dataset"
    local_dataset_dir: str,
    version_notes: str = "",
    ignore_patterns: list[str] | str | None = None,
) -> None

Creates a dataset if the handle is new and creates a version when it already exists. Unlike model uploads, dataset uploads do not accept a license argument.

dataset_load()

kagglehub.dataset_load(
    adapter: KaggleDatasetAdapter,
    handle: str,
    path: str,
    pandas_kwargs: Any = None,
    sql_query: str | None = None,
    hf_kwargs: Any = None,
    polars_frame_type: PolarsFrameType | None = None,
    polars_kwargs: Any = None,
) -> DataFrame | LazyFrame | Dataset
Adapter Returns Install Extra
KaggleDatasetAdapter.PANDAS pandas DataFrame [pandas-datasets]
KaggleDatasetAdapter.POLARS polars LazyFrame or DataFrame [polars-datasets]
KaggleDatasetAdapter.HUGGING_FACE Hugging Face Dataset [hf-datasets]

Supported formats include CSV, TSV, JSON, JSONL, XML, Parquet, Feather, SQLite, Excel.

    The 'kaggle' skill is a comprehensive and secure integration for Kaggle platform operations. It implements multiple security best practices, including credential masking, restrictive file permissions, and protection against token leakage to third-party sites. It also handles untrusted user-generated content from forums using explicit boundary markers to prevent prompt injection.

Python 3.11+, pip packages kagglehub>=1.0.0, kaggle>=2.2.3, kagglesdk>=0.1.33,<1.0, requests, python-dotenv. Optional: playwright for browser badges; kaggle-benchmarks for local benchmark task authoring. The competitions module's SPA-scraping steps assume Playwright MCP tools are provided by the host agent; the skill itself does not bundle them.
