Run it yourself

Create text-driven visuals in Markdown: charts, diagrams, cards, architecture and page layouts. Charts and analytical views (bar, line, pie, heatmap, correlation, regression); reliability and operations (latency, incident, throughput, cycle time, OKR, standup, on-call); product and finance (funnel, retention, revenue, budget); process and workflow (approval, BPMN); software design and behaviour (class, state machine, sequence, C4); dependencies and impact (dependency graph, ER, causality); system architecture as HTML (layer stack, wings, zones, topology, service catalogue, request paths); infrastructure (cloud, Kubernetes, ETL, network, security, IAM, compliance); governance and people (ArchiMate, org chart, hiring); knowledge and planning (mind map, roadmap, Gantt, migration); documents (comparison, SWOT, memo, policy, catalogue, case study). Use when a document needs a diagram, chart or card. Figures render live. Not for slide decks or math notation. Not recommended: mermaid / canvas / drawio / dot.

Percent of Total — Normalized Composition (Vega-Lite)

Best for: comparing composition across periods when every period should sum to the same baseline and the reader cares about share, not absolute total Avoid when: the total size per period is itself important or the categories are too many to stack legibly Answers: how each category’s share changes, and which component dominates within each period

Data Shape

One row per period/category combination. Vega-Lite normalizes the stack so every bar becomes a 100% share view.

Key Options

Option Effect
stack: "normalize" Converts absolute values into percent-of-total composition
Percent-formatted axis Makes the normalized semantics explicit
Stacked color encoding Keeps category membership readable within each period
Shared nominal period axis Supports side-by-side composition comparison

Pitfalls

  • ❌ Using a normalized stack when absolute totals matter → ✅ it hides total growth and shrinkage by design
  • ❌ Too many stacked categories → ✅ small slices become unreadable quickly
  • ❌ Forgetting percent axis formatting → ✅ the reader needs to know the bars sum to 100% |

Alternatives

Variant Use instead
Absolute composition comparison-bars.md or a non-normalized stacked bar
Few categories at one point in time product-mix-donut-badges.md or pie-budget-share.md
Advanced top-k or long-tail share revenue-concentration-topk-others.md

Figures are text in the Markdown — fenced blocks or bare HTML — and the host viewer renders them live: nothing to pre-render, build or install. Export to html / epub / docx / pdf is optional and needs Node 18+ and Chrome/Chromium, via `npx @markdown-viewer/documd`.
