Run it yourself

Create text-driven visuals in Markdown: charts, diagrams, cards, architecture and page layouts. Charts and analytical views (bar, line, pie, heatmap, correlation, regression); reliability and operations (latency, incident, throughput, cycle time, OKR, standup, on-call); product and finance (funnel, retention, revenue, budget); process and workflow (approval, BPMN); software design and behaviour (class, state machine, sequence, C4); dependencies and impact (dependency graph, ER, causality); system architecture as HTML (layer stack, wings, zones, topology, service catalogue, request paths); infrastructure (cloud, Kubernetes, ETL, network, security, IAM, compliance); governance and people (ArchiMate, org chart, hiring); knowledge and planning (mind map, roadmap, Gantt, migration); documents (comparison, SWOT, memo, policy, catalogue, case study). Use when a document needs a diagram, chart or card. Figures render live. Not for slide decks or math notation. Not recommended: mermaid / canvas / drawio / dot.

Donut — Share of Total by Channel (ECharts)

Best for: a small number of categories where the main question is relative share of the whole Avoid when: there are many slices, tiny differences matter, or the reader must compare multiple groups precisely (use bars) Answers: how the total is divided, and which categories dominate the mix

Key Options

Option Effect
radius: [inner, outer] Makes the pie a donut, which improves label room and leaves a calmer centre
center Moves the chart away from the legend so labels do not collide with it
label.formatter Shows both name and percentage directly on the exported chart
avoidLabelOverlap Helps keep outside labels readable when slice sizes differ
itemStyle.borderWidth Separates adjacent slices so the segments stay distinct in static output

Data Shape

One data array of { name, value } objects. Keep the category count small, because each extra slice reduces the chart's readability.

Pitfalls

  • ❌ Using a pie for ten categories → ✅ too many slices destroy comparison; switch to bars
  • ❌ Tiny percentage differences presented as decisive → ✅ pie charts are approximate readers, not precision tools
  • ❌ Several pies in one frame → ✅ compare categories with bars instead of forcing slice-to-slice comparisons
  • ❌ Missing direct labels → ✅ static exports need the percentages on the chart, not only in hover state

Alternatives

Variant Use instead
Exact category comparison comparison-bars.md
Composition over time Stacked bars or an area chart
Hierarchical share of total treemap or sunburst

This skill provides documentation and examples for creating various visuals in Markdown using engines like ECharts, Vega, PlantUML, and HTML. It recommends using the vendor-owned @markdown-viewer/documd CLI tool for document conversion and verification. The skill itself contains no executable code or malicious patterns.

Figures are text in the Markdown — fenced blocks or bare HTML — and the host viewer renders them live: nothing to pre-render, build or install. Export to html / epub / docx / pdf is optional and needs Node 18+ and Chrome/Chromium, via `npx @markdown-viewer/documd`.
