Instagram Content Pillars
A pillar is a recurring content theme that gives your account a clear identity. Instagram rewards accounts that signal a consistent topic, because the recommendation engine can match them to the right non-follower audience. Pillars also make planning a week mechanical instead of agonizing.
The default four pillars
| Pillar | Share | Purpose | Primary goal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Educational | 40% | teach the thing you are known for | saves |
| Story | 30% | first-person build-in-public, wins and losses | follows, comments |
| Engagement | 20% | relatable moments, questions, story stickers | comments, shares |
| Promotion | 10% | the product, the offer, the next step | follows |
Adjust the percentages to the account, but keep no single pillar over ~50% so the feed does not read as one-note.
Why this split
- Educational earns the saves that drive long-tail Explore reach. Lists, frameworks, and how-tos (IG5, IG8, IG10, IG1) live here.
- Story earns the follows. People follow people. Real first-person posts (IG4, IG6) build the trust that converts a viewer into a follower.
- Engagement earns the comments and sends that signal an active, spreadable account. Relatable cold-opens (IG3), pattern-interrupt Reels (IG9), and story poll/question stickers live here.
- Promotion converts the audience the other three pillars built. Keep it scarce so it lands.
Format per pillar
| Pillar | Best surface |
|---|---|
| Educational | carousel (saves) or how-I Reel |
| Story | carousel (before/after) or face-to-camera Reel |
| Engagement | single image, Reel, or story stickers |
| Promotion | carousel or Reel with a single clear next step |
The saves-and-shares discipline
Instagram's 2026 levers are sends per reach and saves, not likes. Every pillar should still ladder to one of those:
- Educational -> saves (reference-worthy).
- Story -> follows + comments (relationship).
- Engagement -> comments + sends (relatable, send-worthy).
- Promotion -> follows + the next step.
When planning a week, the headline target is the weekly saves + shares goal, with at least 3 save-bait posts and 2 send-bait posts. Likes are a vanity number; do not plan around them.
Cadence
- 4-5 feed posts/week is a sustainable, consistent cadence. Consistency beats a daily dump of filler.
- Daily stories run underneath the feed posts: 2-4 frames, including one reshare of a recent feed post.
- Reels can run more often than carousels because each reaches a fresh non-follower audience without fatiguing your existing followers.
