Run it yourself

When the user wants to reverse engineer how another company grew and copy what worked. Also use when the user mentions 'reverse engineer,' 'how did X grow,' 'how does X get customers,' 'growth teardown,' 'marketing teardown,' 'GTM teardown,' 'growth blueprint,' 'what is X doing for marketing,' 'what made X take off,' 'copy X's playbook,' 'X's distribution strategy,' 'what content works for X,' 'funnel hack,' 'map their funnel,' or 'watch what X is doing.' Builds a dated log of a company's moves against its traffic curve from public data, sign-ups and demos, team interviews, and hidden signals (DNS, certificate logs, archives, sponsorships), compares it with the user's own data, and turns what lined up with growth into plays routed to the skill that runs each one. For a snapshot profile of a competitor's positioning, pricing, and features, see competitor-profiling. For comparison pages, see competitors. For why a single post went viral, see social.

Agencies and B2B Services: Teardown Pack

Load this pack for marketing, design, and development agencies, IT services and managed service providers (MSPs), staffing firms, and consulting firms that sell to businesses. Services firms grow through reputation, referrals, and partner ecosystems, so the evidence is in case studies, partner directories, and the founders' public voice more than in ads.

How to Recognize It

  • "Work", "Case studies", "Services", "Industries", and "Book a call" pages, with no pricing or "starting at" pricing
  • Partner badges in the footer (HubSpot, Shopify, Webflow, Salesforce, Google, Microsoft, AWS partner tiers)
  • Scheduling tools on the main CTA (Calendly, SavvyCal, Chili Piper, HubSpot meetings), visible in the button links
  • Productized services pages with fixed scopes and prices ("Website in 30 days", "$X per month")
  • For MSPs: service area pages, support portals, and remote monitoring tools named
  • teardown.mjs detect <domain> flags services language (our work, case studies, clients, partner badges)

What Drives Growth Here

  • Referrals and repeat clients carry most firms. Visible growth often comes from a few big clients, a partner ecosystem, or a founder's audience.
  • Partner ecosystems are distribution. Platform partner directories send leads, and higher tiers get more placement.
  • Founder-led content builds the pipeline. Agencies that grow fast often have a founder posting, speaking, or running a newsletter.
  • Productizing changes the funnel. Fixed-scope, fixed-price offers can be sold with a page and checkout, not only sales calls.
  • Niching down drives pricing. A move from "we do everything" to one industry or one platform often lines up with growth.

Signals to Collect

Signal Where or how What it shows
★ Partner tier history Platform partner directories (HubSpot, Shopify, Webflow, Salesforce AppExchange consultants) and Wayback captures Tier upgrades over time. Each upgrade is a move in moves.csv
★ Positioning shifts teardown.mjs hero <domain> Moves from generalist to a niche, dated
Case study cadence and mix Wayback of the work page; teardown.mjs sitemap-growth Which industries and client sizes they win over time
Client logos over time Wayback captures of the homepage Upmarket moves and big wins
Productized offers Services and pricing pages; teardown.mjs history <url> Fixed-price packages and price changes
Review platforms Clutch, G2 services categories, and partner directory reviews Review velocity and the themes clients mention. Clutch rankings weigh review count and recency, so a burst of reviews is often a deliberate campaign and a move
★ Freelance marketplace profiles Agency profiles on Upwork, Contra, and similar platforms Job counts, earnings badges, and rates over time; some agencies run their first pipeline through these
White-label and referral partnerships "Partners" pages, other agencies' partner lists, platform co-marketing posts Work sent to them by other agencies or software vendors, which never shows as marketing
Founder content The founder's X, YouTube, podcast, and newsletter Audience-led pipeline and the topics that bring clients
Awards and rankings Partner awards, industry rankings, Inc. 5000 lists Reported revenue growth for listed firms, labeled reported
Outbound signals Cold emails the user has received from them; sending tools from teardown.mjs dns Whether outbound is part of their engine
Hiring Careers page and job boards Which services they're scaling, and new offices
Referral and affiliate programs Partner or referral pages Rewards for client and partner referrals
Speaking and events Conference speaker lists, their own webinars Thought leadership as a lead source

Going Inside

  • Book a discovery call only under the user's real identity, and only if the user is open to them knowing it's a competitor or a real buyer. Never pose as a prospect with a fake project.
  • Record the booking form questions, the time to first response, the proposal or pre-call materials, and follow-up.
  • Download lead magnets and subscribe to their newsletter under the user's real identity to log their nurture sequence.

Rules That Limit Copying

  • Client confidentiality: case studies need client permission. Don't copy a competitor's case study format with your own client's details unless you have consent.
  • Partner program rules: platform partner programs control how badges and tiers can be shown.
  • Testimonial rules: the FTC's Endorsement Guides and its rule on fake reviews and testimonials apply to services firms too.
  • Staffing and recruiting: job ads must follow anti-discrimination law (in the US, enforced by the EEOC), and several states require salary ranges in job posts. Candidate data falls under privacy laws such as GDPR and CCPA.

Plays That Usually Transfer

Play Run it with
Niche positioning for one industry or platform product-marketing, copywriting
Productized, fixed-price offers with a clear scope offers, pricing
Founder-led content on one channel social, content-strategy
Partner directory listings and tier upgrades co-marketing, directory-submissions
A case study program by industry sales-enablement
A client and partner referral program referrals
Targeted outbound to a defined account list prospecting, cold-email

Metrics to Ask About

  • Pipeline by source: referrals, partners, content, outbound
  • Win rate and sales cycle length
  • Average contract value and retainer share of revenue
  • Client retention and revenue concentration in the top clients
  • Utilization: billable hours as a share of available hours
  • Revenue per employee
