Run it yourself

When the user wants to reverse engineer how another company grew and copy what worked. Also use when the user mentions 'reverse engineer,' 'how did X grow,' 'how does X get customers,' 'growth teardown,' 'marketing teardown,' 'GTM teardown,' 'growth blueprint,' 'what is X doing for marketing,' 'what made X take off,' 'copy X's playbook,' 'X's distribution strategy,' 'what content works for X,' 'funnel hack,' 'map their funnel,' or 'watch what X is doing.' Builds a dated log of a company's moves against its traffic curve from public data, sign-ups and demos, team interviews, and hidden signals (DNS, certificate logs, archives, sponsorships), compares it with the user's own data, and turns what lined up with growth into plays routed to the skill that runs each one. For a snapshot profile of a competitor's positioning, pricing, and features, see competitor-profiling. For comparison pages, see competitors. For why a single post went viral, see social.

Manufacturing and Industrial: Teardown Pack

Load this pack for manufacturers, industrial B2B suppliers, component makers, and distributors. Growth here runs through engineers and buyers who specify parts, through distributors and dealers, and through long sales cycles, so the evidence lives in catalogs, trade records, and channel partners more than in ads.

How to Recognize It

  • Product catalogs with part numbers, spec sheets, datasheets, and CAD downloads (STEP, DWG)
  • "Request a quote", "Find a distributor", "Where to buy", and "Become a dealer" pages
  • Certifications in the footer or about page: ISO 9001, AS9100, ITAR registration, UL listings
  • Industry pages (aerospace, food and beverage, automotive, medical) and application pages
  • CAD and catalog platforms (CADENAS PARTcommunity, TraceParts, Thomasnet listings) linked from the site
  • teardown.mjs detect <domain> flags catalog, RFQ, and distributor-locator patterns

What Drives Growth Here

  • Getting specified wins the order. An engineer who puts a part number in a design creates years of orders. CAD files, spec sheets, and configurators exist to win that moment.
  • Distributors and dealers carry much of the volume. Adding a distributor, a territory, or a dealer program often explains growth better than marketing does.
  • Trade shows still drive pipeline. Booth size, show choice, and product launches timed to shows are dated, visible moves.
  • Search intent is narrow and technical. Part numbers, materials, and specs carry high intent. Page families per product, material, or application often drive most organic traffic.
  • Capacity limits growth. New plants, lines, and acquisitions show where demand is expected.

Signals to Collect

Signal Where or how What it shows
★ US import records Bill-of-lading databases such as ImportYeti (free) or Panjiva (paid) Ocean shipments into the US over time, their overseas suppliers, and for some companies, their buyers. Air freight, domestic sourcing, and shippers who file for confidentiality don't show. Volume changes are moves in moves.csv
★ Distributor and dealer locator over time Wayback captures of the locator page; count entries per capture When the channel grew, and in which regions
★ CAD and spec downloads Product pages, CAD platforms, gating on downloads Whether they capture engineers as leads, and how
Catalog and page families teardown.mjs site and teardown.mjs sitemap-growth Product, material, and application page rollout by month
Trade show presence Exhibitor lists on show websites, their events page Which shows, how often, and launches timed to them
Industrial directory listings Thomasnet, GlobalSpec, industry association directories Paid placement and categories they compete in
★ Distributor catalog presence Their part numbers on the big catalog distributors for their category (Grainger, McMaster-Carr, MSC for MRO; Digi-Key, Mouser, Arrow for electronics) Which distributors stock them, when listings appeared, and how many SKUs each carries
★ Government contracts USAspending.gov for awards; SAM.gov for registrations and open opportunities Federal contract awards, dated, with amounts and the buying agency
★ Patents Google Patents and the USPTO Product direction, dated by filing
Certifications added Wayback of the quality or certifications page New markets opened (aerospace, medical, defense)
Job posts for plants and territories Careers page and job boards New plants, lines, sales territories, and channel managers
Trade publication coverage Industry magazines and their sponsored content Paid content programs and product launch PR
Acquisitions and new facilities Press releases, local news, state economic development announcements Capacity and market expansion, dated

Going Inside

  • No fake RFQs. A quote request costs a sales team real hours. Submit one only if the user genuinely needs the part.
  • Download a gated CAD file or spec sheet under the user's real identity with approval, then log the follow-up: who calls, how fast, and what they send.
  • Screenshot product configurators and how they capture the lead.
  • Sign up for the distributor or dealer program pages only to read terms that are public. Don't apply as a fake dealer.

Rules That Limit Copying

  • Export controls: ITAR and EAR limit what technical data can be published or sent abroad. Don't copy a CAD-download play for controlled items. Check with counsel.
  • Product claims: safety, performance, and certification claims need evidence. UL, CE, and other marks have usage rules. "Made in USA" claims fall under the FTC's Made in USA Labeling Rule, which requires all or virtually all of the product to be made in the US.
  • Distributor agreements may restrict direct online sales or pricing, so a competitor's direct-to-buyer tactic might break the user's own channel terms.
  • Government contracts: agencies don't endorse vendors, and many contracts have publicity clauses that limit naming the agency or using its logo. Read the clause before copying a "trusted by the US Air Force" claim.

Plays That Usually Transfer

Play Run it with
Product, material, and application page families for technical searches programmatic-seo
Gated CAD and spec downloads with a fast sales follow-up lead-magnets, revops
A distributor and dealer program with co-marketing support co-marketing
Trade show launches with pre-show outreach and post-show follow-up events, cold-email
Directory and catalog platform listings directory-submissions
Account-based outreach to engineering and procurement teams prospecting, ads
Application case studies by industry sales-enablement, content-strategy

Metrics to Ask About

  • Quote requests (RFQs) and quote-to-order rate
  • Spec-in wins: designs that name the part
  • CAD downloads and download-to-opportunity rate
  • Distributor sell-through: what distributors sell, not what they stock
  • Sales cycle length and win rate by industry
  • Revenue per distributor and active distributor count
